This is a British artillery gun shell head spanner which is near complete but missing a tooth. The spanner is in relic condition it is rusty and very pitted but still very solid and not braking up they have been very well cleaned perfect to display or for any collection. This spanner was found in a very famous area of the Somme battlefield they were recovered a good few years ago from Flatiron Copse near Mametz Wood the July 1916 battlefield on the Somme.
Flatiron Copse was the name given by the army to a small plantation a little to the east of Mametz Wood. The ground was taken by the 3rd and 7th Divisions on 14 July 1916 and an advanced dressing station was established at the copse. The cemetery was begun later that month and it remained in use until April 1917.
