This is a Russian 45mm anti-tank gun steel shell case turned in to a candle holder the top has been squashed and it has no remains of the wick inside that can be seen .The case its self with no major damage it has discoloured and is a bit rusty from being buried it still has none of its stamps and markings on the bottom it is in nice condition for a battlefield recovered case that has been re used by the soldiers themselves. The candle holder was recovered from the battlefield on the Seelow Heights in 1945 the opening battle for Berlin.
This battle is often incorporated into the Battle of the Oder-Neisse. The Seelow Heights was where some of the most bitter fighting in the overall battle took place, but it was only one of several crossing points along the Oder and Neisse rivers where the Soviets attacked. The Battle of the Oder-Neisse was itself only the opening phase of the Battle of Berlin.
The result was the encirclement of the German 9th Army and the Battle of Halbe.
