This is a German World War 1 waterbottle re issued for late World War 2 used by Fallschirmjager soldier of the 1st parachute army. This Soldier's Water Bottle has some of its original dark green paintwork still on it.The bottle has no rust holes that can be seen the bottle has some light surface rust the bottle has no top and is not dated it is very solid it is in very nice condition well cleaned perfect for display or any collection.The bottle which is rare to find a re issued one from the battlefield it was recovered from site of a surrender pit dug by Allies after the German 1st parachute army surrendered near Hamburg from the battle that was fought and were large numbers of them surrendered in April - May 1945 in last days of the Reich in Germany.The bottle comes with a A5 laminated information card with photograph.
The Battle of Hamburg was one of the last battles during the war where the remaining troops of the German 1st parachute Army fought the British 8th Army for the control of Hamburg fought between 18 April and 3 May 1945. The 12th SS Regiment defended the outskirts of the city and then the British troops were met with fierce resistance inside the city as Hamburg was the last significant remaining pocket of resistance in the north. Once the British had captured the city, they continued their advance north-east and sealed off the remnants of the 1st Parachute Army. By this time the 1st Parachute Army were a mix of SS, paratroopers, Valkssturm, along with regular Wehrmacht soldiers, supported by sailors, police, firemen and Hitler Youth. Other German units in the area including a tank destroyer battalion, a Hungarian SS unit and many panzerfaust anti-tank troops were still located in the woods south of Hamburg. British troops were met with fierce resistance inside the city as Hamburg was the last significant remaining pocket of resistance in the north. Once the British had captured the city, they continued their advance north-east and sealed off the remnants of the 1st Parachute Army and finally captured the city and a lot of its defenders on the 3rd May 1945.
