This is a pair of shovel heads one German and the other French soldiers both standard issue army ones.The heads which are missing there wooden handles they are in relic but solid condition they have cleaned up ok but are very rusty with rust holes from being buried but are still nice relics found in a very famous area of the Somme battlefield they are perfect for display or any collection.This shovel head were recovered a good few years ago from Flatiron Copse near Mametz Wood the July 1916 battlefield on the Somme.
Flatiron Copse was the name given by the army to a small plantation a little to the east of Mametz Wood. The ground was taken by the 3rd and 7th Divisions on 14 July 1916 and an advanced dressing station was established at the copse. The cemetery was begun later that month and it remained in use until April 1917.
