This is a lovely find from the battlefield which is a German model 1917 egg grenade it is in semi- relic condition at worst near perfect.The grenade which is empty and inert and has no fuse which is maker marked on the bottom clear to see it is very solid it has been nicely cleaned with very little rust and all of its original black paint work the grenade is perfect for display or any collection and very rare to find from the battlefield in this good a condition it has been well protected by the silt in the bottom of the river. The grenade was recovered in 2012 from the River Ancre at Thiepval wood on the Somme battlefield famous for the July 1916 attack the large British offensive but this would have been lost in 1918 during the German Spring offensive of April-May that year when most of the Somme battlefield was captured by the Germans.
