This is a Russian 85mm brass shell case which is rare with the remains of its original ink stamped markings on the side partly readable the case has been squashed at the top properly by the tank its self after it was fired and thrown out the tank.The case still retains some of its brass colour but is dirty and has discoloured due to being buried the markings on the bottom are not very clear to see at all.The case is still very solid and perfect for display and rare to find from the battlefield especially in this condition it has been very well cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection.This shell was fired by the upgraded T34 Tank which mounted the heaver 85mm gun designed to take out the German Tiger Tanks .The shell case was recovered from near Kaunas in Lithuania from Battles around the City in August 1944 during the Russian offensive in Operation Bagration. Operation Bagration which cleared German forces from the Belorussian USSR and eastern Poland between 22 June and 19 August 1944. The operation resulted in the almost complete destruction of an entire German army group, with the loss of Army group centre’s Fourth Army, Third panzer Army and Ninth Army. The Kaunas Offensive covered the operations of Chernyakhovsky's 3rd Belorussian front from 28 July to 28 August, towards the Lithuanian city of Kaunas, subsequent to their completion of the offensive against Vilnius. By 30 July all Wehrmacht resistance on the approaches to the Neman River had retreated or been annihilated. Two days later the city of Kaunas was under Soviet control.
