This is a very very rare French Hotchkiss machine gun wooden tool box this box was issued to a gun there were 47000 hotchkiss made in World War 1 so this box is one of the 47000 that were made a very small number compared to the millions of ammunition boxes for the gun that were made. This box is also in fantastic condition still has most of its dark blue paintwork and black on the bottom and being the tool box it opens from side not the top the lid still opens closes and locks as well both locks move freely and are not stiff it still has its leather carry handle also the wood is still solid for over 100 years old with no real damage at all.On the inside again pretty much damage free but has been well used the rare bit the rare bit the remains of the original paper label on the inside of the lid all the tools and instructions hand written some of it still readable the box is perfect for display or a very rare one for the collection and could even be used for re enacting .This crate comes from a private collection on the Somme a very nice relic from the famous Somme battlefield of 1916-1918.
