This is a Very rare find from the battlefield the one and only i have ever had a German sniper shield 1914 made by the troops themselves the birth of Trench warfare. The shield which is near 2cm thick plate has a crude cut hole in the middle you can see the saw marks the plate is rusty but solid and is in relic condition but still very solid and has been left in as found condition still with dirt and muck attached the plate is 60cm long by 26cm. This lump of metal which properly came from the local area a Factory or Farm something like that was re used by the invading Germans as a sniper shield because in 1914 they did not know trench warfare was coming and they were using anything they could for protection in the trench line. This shield was recovered in 2014 from the old German trench line at La Boisselle in the field opposite where the Lochnagar mine crater is today on the second information card there is photo of the trench line as it looks today the red dot shows the exact location where the plate was found it was recovered during work being carried out right on top of the old German trench line as it was on the 1st July 1916 during battle of the Somme the famous attack on that day. The shield comes with 2 x A5 laminated information cards with maps of the exact location it was found and is one of the rarest relics i have ever had from the Somme battlefield.
