This is a Romanian soldiers shovel head used by a soldier in the Romanian 4th Army rare to find as not as numerous as the German ones .The head which is missing its wooden handle is in very nice solid condition it has cleaned up well it is a bit pitted and rusty from being buried but is a nice example and is perfect for display or any collection. The shovel head was recovered on the battlefield south of Stalingrad which would have been used by soldier in the Romanian 4th Army destroyed in the battles south of Stalingrad in 1942-1943.
Two Romanian armies, the 3rd and the 4th, were involved in the Battle of Stalingrad, helping to protect the northern and southern flanks respectively, of the German 6th Army as it tried to conquer the city of Stalingrad defended by the Soviet red army in mid to late 1942. Underpowered and poorly equipped, these forces were unable to stop the Soviet November offensive operation uranus, which punched through both flanks and left the 6th Army encircled in Stalingrad. The Romanians suffered enormous losses, which effectively ended their offensive capability on the Eastern front for the remainder of the war.
