This is a Very rare to find German wooden crate for artillery gun shell fuses. The box with most of its original marking fairly clear to see on the top also has both its rope carry handles but one of these is broken .The box is missing its internal racks but the hinges are in good working order the lid opens closes and the locks work perfectly as well the box has had wood worm but has been treated and has no real damage and retains a lot of original colour. The inside of the box is the paper label not complete but with some clear maker markings including last pack date 17th January 1915 and the even rarer bit there is lots of hand written markings done by the German soldiers on a gun crew themselves possibly working out ranges for firing it is in nice condition again overall the crate does have a bit of damage from wear and tear when being used but the wood is still solid for over 100 years old and the box is perfect for display or re enacting. This crate comes from a private collection on the Somme and was found years ago barn on a Farm in the village of Miraumont on the Somme battlefield the front line of late 1916 to 1918.It has been in a private collection until now the first time it has left the Somme since the war.A very nice original and iconic item from the famous Somme battlefield and comes with A5 laminated information card.
Miraumont was the German Front line from around September 1916 until it was occupied by British Troops at the end of February 1917 and lost on the 25th March 1918 and then retaken the following 24th August 1918.There was also a large German battery at Miraumont during the fighting.A very nice and rare soldiers item recovered from the famous Somme battlefield of 1916-1918.
