This is a very rare British rifle grenade number 22 pepin Mark 1 or 2 the 1915 pattern the first one i have ever had.The grenade which is a complete outer case which has no rust holes or damage and in lovely solid condition The case has been over painted gold but does have some small amount of original black paintwork remains it is completely inert and empty it has been nicely cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection.The grenade was recovered from the Ypres battlefield of 1914-1918.This grenade comes with A5 laminated information card.
From May 1915, the British Army
organizes in Hazebrouck the manufacturing of prefragmented hand grenades having
the shape of a grapefruit grain (in French 'Pépin') named 'Hand grenade Newton
Pépin'. Dangerous, they will inspire the French Citron foug grenade, as well as
the British rifle grenade N°17 MkI (June 1917), that has been rapidly improved
to become the rifle grenade N°22 Mk I.
