This is a unusal find a 107 years old wooden crate for 50 pounds of Army ration biscuits.The crate which the wood is still solid with no major damage still retains its original nice brown colour and has original some of its black stamped markings on the out side of the box.The box did have a very small amount of wood worm but has been treated it is missing its lid probably lost when the crate was opened to be used it does not have many other markings because the crate has been partly over painted but nothing to bad the crate is a fantastic condition example of this very hard to find 100 years old British army crate which is 23 inches by 12 inches in size.The crate comes from a private collection on the Somme and was found years ago barn on a Farm in the village of Miraumont on the Somme battlefield the front line of late 1916 to early 1917.It has been in a private collection until now the first time it has left the Somme since the war.A very nice original and iconic item from the famous Somme battlefield and comes with 2x A5 laminated information cards.
Miraumont was the German Front line from around September 1916 until it was occupied by British Troops at the end of February 1917 and lost on the 25th March 1918 and then retaken the following 24th August 1918.There was also a large German battery at Miraumont during the fighting.A very nice and rare soldiers item recovered from the famous Somme battlefield of 1916-1918.
