    This is a German 12cm shell projectile shrapnel shell base,nice relic condition fired by 12cm Kanone C/80 fortress gun.The shell base is rusty but with only light surface rust no thick heavy rust and still has a small amount of its original steel colour with no real damage it has been very well cleaned it is perfect for display or any collection the base is completely empty and inert and is in nice condition for a battlefield recovered one which was recovered from Bernafay wood on the July 1916 Somme battlefield.The base plate comes with A5 laminated information card.

    Bernafay Wood, located near Montauban village, was captured by the 9th Scottish Division on 3-4 July 1916 during the opening days of the Somme offensive. A dressing station was established there soon after its capture in early July and was in operation until October. The wood was lost by the British in the German spring offensive of 1918, with the wood captured by the Germans in March–April 1918. However, it was retaken on the 27 August 1918 again by the same soldiers of the 9th Scottish Division.
