The Gothic line, also known as the Green Line is a defensive fortification built by the German Wehrmacht during WW2 to stop the Allied advance and divide Italy. The line runs along the Apennine ridge from the Tyrrhenian sea to the Adriatic sea, and the Bologna area has an 80km stretch of the line. The allies broke through the line in August 1944.
