The 3rd Mountain Division was a formation of the German Wehrmacht during World War 2. It was created from the Austrian Army 's 5th and 7th Divisions following the Anschluss in 1938.

The Battle of Narvik saw Norway's toughest fight in World War II; nearly 7,500 Norwegian soldiers participated in the battle, along with British, French and Polish troops against the German Gebirgsjager soldiers of the 3rd Mountain Division. The reconquest of Narvik was the first time the Third Reich war machine had to be removed from a captured city. The Allies briefly managed to tack back the town but abandoned it to the Germans after the invasion of France.
