Messerschmitt me 262 jet plane work number 37064

Helmut Lennartz was the pilot of ME262 number 37064. At the time they encountered US fighter ace Major R. Foy. The jet was flying with another ME262 the two had been aloft long enough to be very low on fuel, and had hoped to land at Achmer or Hesepe. However, a swarm of U.S. fighters in these areas precluded them and the two made for Bremen, using only enough power to keep ahead of Foy. As Lennartz was on final to Bremen but both engines quit due to fuel starvation the plane was also damaged by allied fighters and crashed in Bassum south of Bremen on the 6th November 1944.

Helmut Lennartz was a former German Luftwaffe fighter ace during world war 2. He is credited with 13 aerial victories, including eight victories while flying the Messerschmitt Me-262 jet fighter. He is noted for achieving the first aerial victory over a B-17 flying fortress on 15 August 1944 while flying the Messerschmitt Me-262 on 15 August 1944
