This is a German soldiers M40 steel helmet which has very little original green paintwork remains and no decals. The helmet has ripped and bent and partly crushed in an explosion which is in relic and rusty condition with a large impact damage hole and no real rust damage but is very rusty around the whole helmet but still very solid overall. The helmet is very rare to have a near complete leather liner left in side and chin strap remains  the leather is solid still retains its original colour it is not braking up or falling apart it has been very nicely cleaned and for such a heavy rusted helmet to have no rust holes is very unusual and it is a very dry rust not wet mud rust as it has been inside a dry bunker it is still very solid not braking up or crumbling and is perfect for display or any collection. The helmet was recovered from an old German bunker in Finland on the Northern side of the battlefield around Leningrad during its liberation of 1944.The helmet comes with 2xA5 laminated information cards with map

In early 1944 the SS nordaland division, along with the rest of the III SS Panzer Corps arrived at the front near Leningrad and was put into action against the Soviet Red Army attacks aimed at breaking the German encirclement of the city. The Red Army forced Nordland to withdraw to Oranienbaum. On 14 January 1944, the Soviets succeeded in collapsing the German front.

The Wehrmacht 16th Army was deployed with Army group North during operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union.  It was subsequently involved in the Siege of Leningrad. The Soviets relieved Leningrad in January 1944.
