The 14th panzer Corps also participated in the battle of Monte Cassino under the command of General Von Senger und Etterlin and included among its formations, the 1st Parachute Division, the 15th Panzergrenadier Division and the 29th Panzergrenadier Division, which had previously fought under it in Sicily. It remained on the Italian front until its surrender at the end of the war.
After the Gustav Line was breached on 12th May 1944 British and Indian army units had attempted, without success, to storm the Hitler Line. A set piece battle, Operation Chesterfield, was planned for May 23 and Canadian soldiers were to play the dominant role. Ultimately the Canadians prevailed, but at a horrific cost, with 890 casualties in one day, making it the single worst day of fighting in the entire Italian campaign.
