This is a early war German aluminium MG 34/42 ammunition tin Patronenkasten 34 pattern. The tin still with most of its original black paintwork it is maker marked, dated 1940 and waffen stamped that can be seen very clearly on the top of the lid .The lid still opens, closes but the lock does not work as it is broken it does still have its carry handle which has rusted solid i the tin is in semi- relic condition at worst overall very good condition still with a lot of original colour it does not have any rust holes with one large hole at the join of the lid which looks like battle damage impact hit. This tin is unusual to find from the battlefield in such good condition with so much paintwork and colour the tin has about 80%-85% of its original paint work the tin overall in nice condition the small handles on the side both are in place and work a very rare and very nice battlefield relic. The tin was recovered near the town of Kalach in the area they captured in the battle of July-August 1942 on the Stalingrad front in Russia. The tin comes with 2x A5 laminated information cards.

The Battle of Kalach took place between the German Sixth Army and elements of the Soviet Stalingrad Front between July 25 and August 11, 1942. The Soviets deployed the 62nd and 64th Armies in a Don River bridgehead west of Kalach with the intent of impeding the German advance on Stalingrad which they managed to do for a few weeks before they were destroyed or captured by the German 6th Army then they advanced to Stalingrad.
