This is a very nice find a RAF British aerial bomb nose or tail fuse fitting for a NO42 fuse.It is complete and is in nice solid condition it still retains most of its original colour and has many maker markings which can be seen very clear as well as its nice colour but has turned a bit dark from being buried it has been very well cleaned it does have a bit of damage the metal is pitted but overall is in very nice solid condition perfect for display or any collection. The fitting was recovered on what was RAF Thorpe Abbotts near Diss in Norfolk, used by the RAF in 1942 until June 1943 when American B17 bombers of the 100th Bomb group were based there. The top which comes with A5 laminated information card with pictures.
In 1943, RAF Thorpe Abbotts became home to the United States Army Air Force’s (USAAF) 100th Bomb Group. This unit eventually gained the nickname ‘The Bloody Hundredth’ due to heavy losses they suffered in combat. After the war, the airfield was transferred to the RAF on 27 June 1946. After many years of inactivity, Thorpe Abbotts was closed in 1956.
