This is a rare to find German 1898-1905 pattern butcher bayonet scabbard which is near complete. The scabbard still has no paintwork remains it is in relic condition it is rusty with a few small rust holes and one large one and does have a bit of damage it is still very solid it is not braking up or falling apart at all it has been very well cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection and scabbard like this are hard find from the battlefield as only thin metal and they have normally rotted away. The scabbard belonging to an soldier in the Marine Infantry Brigade which was recovered in 2016 from Regina Trench near Courcelette on Somme battlefield of 1916 and comes with A5 laminated information card.
In late September 1916, the Marine Infantry Brigade, moved into Regina trench and the German front line the unit which was comprising the 1st and 2nd Marine-Brigade from the 1st Marine-Division and the 3rd Marine-Brigade from the 2nd Marine-Division, with an infantry complement equivalent to an army division. The marines were well-trained and rested troops of excellent quality and were transferred moved from the Belgian coast to the Somme. The move was as part of a general relief of the divisions opposite the British. On 30 September, the Marine-Brigaden moved up through Baum Mulde (Boom Ravine) and relieved the 8th Division on the right of the 4th Ersatz Division in Regina trench.
