    This is a British army issue soldiers wooden axe handle metal head connector the part that connected the head to the handle for the pick axe.The connector is in relic condition it is rusty and very pitted but still very solid and not braking up one of the bars is loose from the top ring but it has been very well cleaned perfect to display or for any collection.This axe part was found in a very famous area of the Somme battlefield it was recovered a good few years ago from Flatiron Copse near Mametz Wood the July 1916 battlefield on the Somme.

    Flatiron Copse was the name given by the army to a small plantation a little to the east of Mametz Wood. The ground was taken by the 3rd and 7th Divisions on 14 July 1916 and an advanced dressing station was established at the copse. The cemetery was begun later that month and it remained in use until April 1917.
