    This is a German 1st pattern double maxim machine gun ammunition tin which are much rarer to find then the standard ones and hard to get hold off .The tin is in relic condition not complete missing its front and one side but still very solid but does have rust holes and damage but is still very solid not braking up or falling apart and the rare bit it does have some original black paintwork on the lid and in other places as well it still has its locking catch and one side handle both have rusted solid. The inside of the box also has some original paintwork the whole box has been fairly well preserved by the silt in the river the damage and missing panels is battle damage not rusted away as there is also impact hole and rips the box has been very well cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection. The box was recovered in 2020 from the River Ancre at Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme battlefield the area of the famous attack on the 1st July 1916 the very large British offensive this area was also attacked by troops from the Newfoundland regiment but all attacks were repulsed and the area stayed in German hands until November 1916.This box comes with 2xA5 laminated information cards.
