During the D-Day landings in Normandy, many Sherman tanks, specifically the Duplex Drive (DD) Sherman tanks, sank off the coast of Omaha Beach due to rough seas. These amphibious tanks, designed to swim to shore before engaging their tracks, were deployed too far out and were swamped by the high waves. Of the 29 American amphibious tanks launched off Omaha Beach, 27 sank.
